Weird things Fans have known since earlier this year that the series’ fourth season will be split into two debuts, although it wasn’t confirmed until recently that Volume 1 will consist of seven episodes and that Volume 2 will include the last two installments. Rather than splitting the season midway through, Episode 7’s events come with some major revelations and ramifications, and it feels more like a mid-season finale than an episode that will be revealed near the end of the season. With these first seven episodes now streaming on Netflix, we’re here to break down some of the biggest narrative discoveries to come later in this volume.
Warning: spoilers below for Stranger Things Season 4 – Volume 1
One plot point that has worried audiences for nearly three years is what happened to Hopper (David Harbor) after his apparently fatal sacrifice in Season 3. prisoner. Additionally, the post-credits scene revealed that Russia also has a captive Demogorgon.
Over the course of the season, Hopper devises an escape plan, and while he finds freedom briefly, he is eventually captured and sent back to prison to fight the Demogorgon, who survives by eating prisoners. Hopper’s encounter with the monster coincides with the arrival of Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Murray (Brett Gilman) to help rescue Hopper, where he manages to inflict severe injuries on the creature and reunite the pair.
The season’s other two main themes focus on Eleven (Milley Bobby Brown) trying to channel her seemingly hidden power and the rest of the Hawkins gang trying to figure out the identity of the brutal Vecna, who is murdering teens.
Eleven ends up teaming up with Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) and Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) to use isolation gear in an attempt to uncover forgotten items from her past. During the process, she was once again able to make use of her teleportation abilities, which also lead to the discovery of the origins of Vicna.
Vecna had powers similar to Eleven, although at a young age he despised humanity. He used these powers to kill his mother and sister, leading to the blame for his father. Vecna, born Henry Creel, was hospitalized after his crimes and became Dr. Brenner’s first patient, earning the new nickname “The One”. This included Henry getting a 001 tattoo, similar to the one worn by Eleven.
When young Eleven realizes his treacherous motives, the pair engage in a violent confrontation, apparently resulting in one murder, though he is in fact exiled to the Upside Down. This caused the opening of the first portal to the Upside Down, through which the Demogorgon escaped in season one. After his Upside Down years one is mentally and physically transformed into a terrifying character named Vecna, who clearly still despises humanity.
While there are still a number of mysteries to be answered, the Season 4 finale – Volume 1 has brought with it some satisfying discoveries.
